Before Windows begins to load, the computer must initialize itself. The process looks something like this:
- When the computer first starts up, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) loads
- Drivers such as the keyboard are loaded
- Drivers for hard drives are loaded
- The BIOS searches for a Master Boot Record (MBR) and if it finds one, it turns control over to it.
What to do about a Slow Computer
There are a number of reasons why a computer would slow down and one of the primary factors is Windows Updates. A four year old computer for example may have run Windows XP well when it was new, but Windows XP itself has changed over the years and that four year old computer would likely have gotten those changes via Windows Update. As Windows changes, it generally needs more resources and eventually a computer that was once fast, becomes incredibly slow.
With that said, Windows Updates can push a computer’s resources but it is not at all the only thing that can slow a computer. In fact, it’s more often the case that a number of factors have contributed to the slow down. Following are some of the things to check.
