As a long time network administrator, I’ve tried the gambit of spyware removal tools and have learned that choosing a spyware removal tool is not a task to take lightly. It is all too common to find that some free antispyware tool you’ve come across may well be spyware itself. XP Antispyware 2009 is a good example of a program that falsely reports virus and spyware infections in an effort trying to get you to pull out your credit card.

I began using Malwarebytes on occasion a few years ago. I think the best Malwarebytes review I’ve had was when I was at a client’s business with another network admin from out of town who was working on a hosted Microsoft exchange project. We were shooting the breeze when he brought the subject of Malwarebytes up and aksedif I’d used it. I said I had and we traded success stories using the product. We both agreed that running in safe mode, Malwarebytes does a great job cleaning up malware.

There are a few tried and true spyware removal tools and I looked at some that I use in my day to day work in my Best Spyware Removal Tool and Best Virus Scanner article. In particular, I’m quite fond of the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and I was pleased to see the free version of Malwarebytes included on it close to a year ago. That’s a great Malwarebytes review in itself!

As I pointed out in Best Spyware Removal Tool and Best Virus Scanner, the UBCD4Win can be tough fot the average user to work with and it’s “after the fact” product; you use it to clean damage that’s already been done. Most users will want a combination of after the fact software combined with ongoing protection; the paid version of Malwarebytes offers just that. Some of the other features are:

  • Support for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista (32-bit and 64-bit).
  • Light speed quick scanning.
  • Ability to perform full scans for all drives.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Protection Module. (requires registration)
  • Database updates released daily.
  • Quarantine to hold threats and restore them at your convenience.
  • Ignore list for both the scanner and Protection Module.
  • Settings to enhance your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware performance.
  • A small list of extra utilities to help remove malware manually.
  • Multi-lingual support.
  • Works together with other anti-malware utilities.
  • Command line support for quick scanning.
  • Context menu integration to scan files on demand.
  • And oh ya, it helps get rid of XP Antispyware 2009 ;)
